Marsaxlokk Sunday Market — the most famous. Fresh fish, fruit, vegetables, souvenirs. Get there by 9 AM before the crowds.

Valletta Daily Market — small but genuine local market near Merchants Street.

Fresh fruit & veg from market stalls (usually parked on village squares) is significantly cheaper than supermarkets.

Wine: Malta produces surprisingly good wines — mostly from the south of the island. Look for Marsovin and Meridiana labels. The local Gellewza (red) and Ghirgentina (white) grapes are unique to Malta.

Beer: Cisk is Malta's national lager — a light, crisp lager brewed here since 1929. Very drinkable on a hot day. €2–3 at most bars.

Spirits: Bajtra (prickly pear liqueur) is Malta's most distinctive spirit. Sweet, pink, and very Maltese. Also try Anisette (anise-based), common at village festas.

Kinnie Spritz — mixing Kinnie with prosecco has become a trendy local cocktail.

Every Maltese village celebrates its patron saint's feast with a week-long festa. There are 365+ festas per year — almost one per day.

Each village is split into two rival band clubs (e.g. Prim'Arkata vs Banda San Gejtanu in Ħamrun) who compete in decorations, fireworks and music. The rivalry is intense and friendly.

• Streets dressed in coloured lights and banners for the whole week
• Brass band marches (marchetti) every evening leading up to the feast day
• Ground fireworks (murtali) that are deafeningly loud
• Aerial fireworks on the feast night — world-class displays

Peak festa season: May–September. Most busy weekends have 2–3 festas running simultaneously across the island.

February — Karnival ta' Malta (Carnival): 500+ year tradition. Floats, costumes, masks in Valletta. Also in Victoria, Gozo.

March/April — Good Friday Processions: Life-size biblical statues carried through town by barefoot penitents. Zejtun, Mosta, Qormi and Birgu are unmissable.

April — Ta' Frawli Strawberry Festival, Mġarr.

June — Malta Arts Festival: Theatre, music and visual arts across Valletta. Malta Jazz Festival (mid-July): 3 nights at the Grand Harbour.

Jun 29 — Mnarja (Imnarja): Malta's oldest folk festival at Buskett Gardens. Overnight camping, rabbit stew, traditional folk music (għana).

August 15 — Santa Marija: The biggest festa of the year, celebrated in 7 villages simultaneously. Mosta and Attard have famous ones.

October — Notte Bianca: Valletta's all-night arts and culture event. Museums, galleries and streets open until dawn.

Għana (pronounced "a-na") is Malta's traditional folk music — part Semitic, part Mediterranean, entirely unique. It has two main forms:

Spirtu Pront — improvised competitive singing between two or more singers. They take turns, each verse must rhyme and respond to the previous. The audience cheers. It can go on for hours.

Fil-Għoli — a slower, mournful style, often solo, with a melismatic Arabic-influenced melodic style.

Għana is heard at Mnarja, festas, and dedicated events. It's rare to find in regular bars — check event listings at Heritage Malta and the local cultural calendar for scheduled performances.

Malta Arts Festival (June, Valletta) — International and local artists, outdoor performances, visual installations. Free and ticketed events.

Malta Jazz Festival (July, Grand Harbour) — Three nights of jazz on a floating stage with Valletta's skyline as backdrop. World-class acts.

Notte Bianca (October, Valletta) — All-night cultural event. Museums, galleries and performance spaces open until 4 AM. One of the best nights in Valletta all year.

Isle of MTV (June/July) — Free outdoor concert at Floriana Granaries. Attracts 50,000+ people and major international artists.

Malta's prehistoric temples are among the oldest free-standing structures on Earth — built around 3600–2500 BC, predating Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids by over 1,000 years.

Key sites:
• Ħaġar Qim & Mnajdra (south Malta) — two adjacent temple complexes overlooking the sea. Mnajdra is astronomically aligned with solstices and equinoxes.
• Tarxien Temples (Paola) — urban setting, most decorated of the temples with carved reliefs.
• Ġgantija Temples (Gozo) — UNESCO listed, exceptionally well preserved.
• Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum — a subterranean sanctuary carved into rock circa 3000 BC. UNESCO site, very limited entry — book months ahead.

800 BC — Phoenicians used Malta as a trading and navigation base. The name "Malta" likely derives from the Phoenician word for honey (malet).

218 BC — Romans took Malta during the Second Punic War. St Paul was famously shipwrecked here in 60 AD — this event is credited with bringing Christianity to the islands (celebrated every Feb 10th as a public holiday).

870 AD — Arab conquest. The Arabs ruled for 200 years and left a profound mark on the Maltese language — most of the core vocabulary in Maltese is Arabic-derived. Place names across Malta (Żurrieq, Ħaż-Żabbar, Qormi) reflect this era.

1090 — Norman conquest under Roger I of Sicily. Malta then passed through Angevin, Aragonese and Spanish hands over the following centuries.

In 1530, Holy Roman Emperor Charles V granted Malta to the Knights Hospitaller (Order of St John) after they were expelled from Rhodes. They transformed the island into a Christian fortress.

The Great Siege of 1565 — one of history's most dramatic military stands. A 40,000-strong Ottoman fleet besieged Malta for four months. The Knights and Maltese population, outnumbered and cut off, held out. The Ottomans retreated. Malta's resistance echoed across Europe.

The Knights built Valletta — named after Grand Master Jean de Valette who led the siege defence. Completed in 1571, it remains one of the best-preserved Renaissance cities in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Knights were expelled by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1798 in a bloodless takeover — they had grown weak and many Knights refused to fight fellow Catholics.

1800 — After Napoleon's brief occupation, Malta invited the British in. It formally became a Crown Colony in 1813 and remained one of Britain's most strategically vital naval bases for 150 years.

WWII — The Siege of Malta (1940–1942): Malta was bombed more intensively than any other territory in the war — over 3,000 air raids. The island was awarded the George Cross by King George VI in 1942 for its collective bravery. Malta is the only territory (not individual) to receive this distinction.

1964 — Independence from Britain, within the Commonwealth.
1974 — Republic declared, Malta became fully sovereign.
2004 — EU membership. 2008 — Eurozone.

Key heritage from the British era: left-hand driving, British-style governance, English language, red post boxes (still in use), and a deep love of football.

Around 85–90% of Maltese identify as Catholic — one of Europe's most devout nations. With ~365 churches for 500,000 people, the Church permeates the landscape and the calendar.

What this means in practice:
• Public holidays follow the Catholic calendar (Good Friday, Feast of the Assumption, Immaculate Conception, etc.)
• Abortion remains illegal in Malta — one of very few EU states
• Divorce was legalised only in 2011 — after a contentious referendum
• Blasphemy is technically an offence (rarely prosecuted)
• The village feast day is the most important local event of the year — treated like a mini-Christmas

Non-Catholics are welcome and visible. The Church's social role is significant but Malta has become progressively secular in the past decade, especially among younger people.

Despite its Catholic majority, Malta has become one of Europe's most LGBTQ+-progressive countries — consistently ranked #1 or #2 in the ILGA-Europe rainbow index.

Crime: Malta is one of the safest countries in Europe. Violent crime is very low. Petty theft does occur in tourist-heavy areas (Valletta, St Julian's) — normal urban precautions apply. Road accidents are more of a concern than crime.

Social norms:
• Village identity is strong — Maltese people identify deeply with their village. Asking "where are you from?" often means which village.
• Hospitality is genuine — being invited to a Maltese family Sunday lunch is a real honour
• Conservative dress is expected inside churches and chapels (no shorts, covered shoulders)
• Noise levels during festas can be extreme — ground fireworks (murtali) at 6 AM are a tradition in many villages
